From Asheville, North Carolina, it’s This Dog’s Life. I’m Ira G. Each week, of course, I pick a theme and present a story in four panels.

This week’s episode: Nicknames. Like family, you usually can’t choose them for yourself…you can only choose to accept them. Or not, although, protesting won’t change much. I didn’t ask to be called these names you know.

What are your nicknames, and how did you get them? What nicknames have you bestowed on others? Tell me yours, and I’ll tell you some of my mom’s. Why? Because revenge is sweet, my friends. Sweet as gooseberry pie.

    Ira – it's because your personality is so complex that you need many names. You, my friend, have many facets. And I think Gooseberry Pie is probably several notches above Tiger Pig, Violet Poohregard, Tasmanian Porkchop Torpedo Devil, and Goober Chunk. Just sayin, it could be worse…..

    My Golden Retriever, Nicky, loved to goose guests too! Nicky the 'Golden Deceiver' was devoted to Alix the Sheltand Sheepdog — a.k.a. 'Miz Nasty,' 'Princess of Onamatopeia,' 'Prinnie,' and 'She Who May Be Obeyed.'

    Dogs with strong personalities attract a lot of nicknames. How else can we humans do justice to your complexity?

    What's good for the goose, right? Those are some great nicknames, but I'm curious: What onomatopeic words does Miz Nasty use most? Woof? Bow wow? Ruff? She sounds really cool. Nicky too. And what about Quincey? Any nicknames for that chap?
