Runny Bunny: Creature Comforts

July 06, 2010, 09:00 am  Posted by Nicole McConville

I’ve been a fan of the ceramic work of Robin VanValkenburgh, a.k.a. Runny Bunny, for years. At first glance they might remind you of little knickknacks you’d find on your grandmother’s mantle or a discovery tucked away in the corner of an antique store. But look a little closer. What you’ll soon see is an exquisite corpse spirit of hybrid creatures that carry a delightful sense of awkwardness, frivolity and play. A baby’s head propped atop a bird’s body. A deer combined with a well-postured Victorian lady. It’s like a vivid dream of the land of misfit toys frozen in time and space. As a aficionado of the careful marriage of awkwardness and elegance, I find this community of creatures utterly delightful. For those of you lucky enough to live in the Asheville area, you can see some of Robin’s work in person at the upcoming Big Crafty event this coming weekend.

Oh, Big Crafty, here I come! I've admired these for far too long!

I LOVE Robin's work. I always enjoy when they pop up in gallery shows and sales. Her table gets broad smiles or raised eyebrows. I think about the figurines my ancient aunts have in their living rooms, imagine how long before they'd notice if I snuck one of these into the mix.

Those are amazing. I live in Charlotte, not too far from Asheville. The bizarreness is absolutely wonderful, how creative!
