Remember trading cute Valentine’s Day messages with friends in elementary school? The classroom was filled with exchanges of colorful little cards, cute candies and chocolates, and even the occasional carnation. Teachers handed out clusters of hearts to paint in reds, whites, and pinks. Vocabulary lists for the day contained words like ‘cupid,’ and everyone seemed just a little extra excited to be in class. Well, today’s free project would be the perfect gift to make Valentine’s Day a little extra special for the youngsters in your life. With sweethearts in the O’s, this soft and portable Tic Tac Toe board from Stash Happy: Appliqué will breathe new life into an old favorite just in time for the holiday.

Quilt a Love Letter

There are so many ways to craft a Valentine’s message… why not say it with a mini quilt? In this lovely piece by Deborah Boschert from Creative Quilting with Beads, “love” is happening on multiple levels! The patchwork pattern forms a large “L” shape with cute beaded Xs and Os for added dimension. And what’s not to love about the quilting pattern! Plug in some of your favorite beads and fabrics, and up the love factor even more.

Just Ducky Home Show!

Okay, serious question… and be honest. What is the best part of sewing handmade goodies for babies and kids? Picking out the fabrics, of course! From there, it’s pretty much all downhill: cutting patterns, pinning, sewing, repinning, pressing, and, finally, worrying about the fit. Wouldn’t it be great if you could pick the fabrics and then let someone else do the work?

Just Ducky offers just that: American-made, custom children’s clothing perfect for your little one. And you get to pick the fabric… plus a bunch of other fun options, too!

Based in our neck of the woods here in Western North Carolina, Just Ducky has been creating custom clothing for kids since the early 80s. They’re currently celebrating the release of their spring 2012 line, a collection of new designs and new fabrics to choose from. Available in a few select retail stores in the Asheville, Just Ducky does most of their work through home shows: think trunk show in a cozy environment, good company, and fun with fabric. And you’re invited!

Giving Handmade: Woolen Tree Trio

Are you hosting the holidays this year? Or are you traveling for them? Either way, a few extra holiday decorations would fit right in. These trees, designed by Lindy Cline (aka PLY Textiles) for Stash Happy: Felt, would make a classy centerpiece, too! Just add a couple ~~handmade wax~~ LED candles to the mix.

Perhaps more than any other project we’ve shared, these are the ultimate stash-buster. Have scraps of felt? Make the medium tree. Only have yarn? Make the big one instead! Or just grab that stray bit of roving and whip up the tiny tree. No matter what you’ve got in your drawers or bins, there’s a (tree) wrap for that.

Ok, lame jokes making their appearance probably means it’s time to sign off for the winter break. Hope you all have fun, wherever you are!
